Top Tips

Jobkit >> After the interview

After the interview don’t be over critical. Concentrate on what went well, your good answers to questions and the positive overall impression that you have created. Then, look at the interview from the other person’s perspective and ask yourself:

  • What could I have done differently or better?
  • Did I feel as well prepared as I could be?
  • What did I answer well?
  • Is the company one that I want to work with?
  • Did I sell myself?

Follow up

Hopefully you will have remembered to ask when any decisions will be made. If the date goes by, give them a call and show that you are still keen. Even if you don’t get the job you can learn from the experience and use it to improve your future performance.

If you are unsuccessful, ask for feedback as this will help you at your next interview. Some reasons why applications are rejected at this stage are:

  • Inappropriate appearance
  • Being late
  • Appearing disorganised
  • Poor communication skills
  • Lack of insight into the organisation or job (i.e. not having done your homework!)
  • Lack of energy or enthusiasm
  • A tendency to make excuses and blame others
  • Coming across as only interested in what you can get out of the organisation
  • Sarcasm, aggression or rudeness
  • A lack of confidence
  • Poor references

“Remember there are always more candidates than jobs, so you should congratulate yourself on getting this far.  Keep trying, the next interview could be the one that gets that job.”
